Profile

Born in Spain but based in London since 1992, Elena Garcia originally trained as a linguist, specialising in Public Services Interpreting. Her interpreter’s job has led her to work with many local groups and has made her aware of the problems faced by migrant communities and people in penitentiary institutions. Following her passion for design, n 2001 she decided to re-train as a designer and went back to education, finishing a degree in Surface Textiles for Fashion at the London College of Fashion.

Elena started re-working fashion waste many years ago, in order to come up with new and unique textile designs without having to make an entire garment. Her customised garments soon caught the attention of family and friends and she found herself with a loyal client base which resulted in the creation of Sew Last Season. The label’s unique designs have put Elena on the fashion map, attracting interest from Jane Shepherdson, Oxfam, Moss Bros, Love, Life Stories, Adili and The Natural Store and trend visionaires TrendStop in only a few months.

Elena also runs an eco-couture label (www.elenagarciastudio.com) and offers eco-design consultancy services, as well as public speaking on sustainable fashion. She is a member of the Ethical Fashion Forum, The Eco Designers Network, the Conscious Designers Collective and Craft Central.
